Bronstein delay vs. simple delay: same math, different display

Both Bronstein and simple (US) delay give you a few free seconds per move without ever letting your clock grow. Simple delay waits — say 5 seconds — before your main time starts ticking. Bronstein delay lets your clock tick immediately but refunds the time you used, up to the bonus, after your move. The two are mathematically equivalent; only the display differs.

How simple (US) delay works

With a simple delay — the standard in USCF tournament play — your main clock does not start immediately when it becomes your turn. Instead, a separate countdown runs first: with a 5-second delay, you get 5 free seconds every move. Only after the delay expires does your main time begin to drain.

Move within the delay and your main time is untouched. Think for 20 seconds with a 5-second delay and you lose 15 seconds of main time. Simple, predictable, and your clock can never increase — which is exactly why organizers who dislike ever-growing increment clocks favor it.

How Bronstein delay works

Bronstein delay reaches the same destination by a different road. Your main clock starts ticking the moment your turn begins — no waiting period. But when you complete your move, the clock refunds the time you spent, up to the delay amount.

With a 5-second Bronstein delay: think for 3 seconds, get all 3 back; think for 20 seconds, get 5 back, for a net loss of 15. The refund is capped at the bonus, so, like simple delay, your clock can never rise above where it started the move. Some players prefer Bronstein's display because the main clock always shows continuous countdown pressure; others prefer simple delay because the free seconds are explicitly visible.

The equivalence, move by move

Here is the same sequence of thinks under both systems, each with a 5-second bonus, starting from 10:00 on the clock:

Every row ends at the same number. Whatever the sequence of moves, a 5-second simple delay and a 5-second Bronstein delay leave both players with identical remaining time. They are one system wearing two faces.

Delay vs. Fischer increment: the real difference

The distinction that actually changes the game is between delay (either flavor) and the Fischer increment:

  • Fischer: the bonus is added outright, every move, with no cap. Move in 1 second on a 5-second increment and your clock grows by 4 seconds. Fast play banks time for later.
  • Delay/Bronstein: the bonus only offsets time you actually spend. Move instantly and you gain nothing; your clock can never exceed its value at the start of the move.

Practical consequence: under Fischer, a player with seconds left can rebuild a workable clock by finding quick moves, so winning endgames get converted. Under delay, low time stays low forever — you get breathing room per move but never recover. Delay keeps sessions on a tighter schedule; increment produces fewer wins on time alone. Who uses which — and David Bronstein's legacy

The USCF standardized on simple delay: the common club control G/30 with a 5-second delay, and slower events like 120 minutes with 5-second delay, are American staples, and USCF rules give delay-capable clocks preferred status. FIDE and most international events went the Fischer route instead, with 30-second increments in classical play.

The Bronstein mode is named for David Bronstein (1924–2006), the brilliant Soviet grandmaster who drew a World Championship match against Botvinnik in 1951, one game short of the title. A creative thinker off the board as well as on it, he proposed the refund-based timing system decades before digital clocks made it practical — one of several ideas (he was also an early advocate of faster chess) that outlived his playing career.

Frequently asked questions

Is Bronstein delay the same as US delay?

Mathematically, yes. Both give up to the same number of free seconds per move and never let the clock grow. Simple (US) delay counts the free seconds before the main clock starts; Bronstein lets the main clock run and refunds up to the bonus afterward. Remaining time is identical either way.

Can your clock increase with Bronstein delay?

No. The refund is capped at the time you actually spent, so your clock can never exceed what it showed when your move began. That is the key difference from a Fischer increment, which is added in full and can grow your clock.

What delay does USCF use?

A 5-second simple delay is the USCF standard for most regular-rated time controls, such as G/30 d5 or 120 minutes with 5-second delay. USCF rules favor delay-capable digital clocks as standard equipment.

Should I play with delay or increment?

Use increment (Fischer) if you want endgames to be decided on the board — low-time players can rebuild their clock by moving fast. Use delay if you want a predictable maximum game length with a small per-move cushion. For casual blitz, 3+2 Fischer is the most popular compromise.
